Summer update from HobieGirls

What a great summer, 5 weeks with an average temperature of 25° – 32° degrees (which is very unusual for Denmark) and perfect for sailing the Cat and chilling out on the beach – so that is practically what we have been up to all summer.

Michala sailed the Hobie Cat up to the summer town with her mother – a trip which took 4,5 hours. Michala’s mother used to sail the Cat back in the 70’s.

Yoanna went to Germany to see the “Sylt Sailing Week 2014″. Here the best Hobie sailors (only one team per country) were gathered, this year they were from Germany, Australia, India, the Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, Denmark, South Africa and USA. They competed in the waves right in front of Westerland, which is a 17-year old tradition of successful regattas organized by Pro Sail- 10 days of sailing/racing at The North Sea island, Sylt.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Meagan Bursa, a very good Australian sailor from Australia stayed with Yoanna for 2 weeks – (Meagan helped the HobieGirls at the European Championships in Barcelona at the beginning of this summer).

Meagan sailed the Cat with Michala and taught her some very good tricks, BUT it must have been hard on Meagan because she fell asleep on the boat. (The Hobie Cat is still fine and we are all back in Copenhagen ready for more adventures).

Michala competed in the race “Tour the Øresund” last weekend together with a very young sailor Maria as neither Yoanna nor Kirsten could race. They did very well apart from the first race where they went out in a 3 knots oncoming current where they lost 8 boats. Sailing in current is very tricky but hopefully a mistake like that will never happen again… They learned a lot. They won first prize for Hobie Classic.

We had to move our Hobie Cat to another harbor closer to Copenhagen because our local harbor is closing for 8 months due to renovations. So Clarissa had to step in and help us sail the boat further south. We had a lovely evening but with absolutely no wind…

Luckily another race is coming up this weekend, The Danish Open Nationals in Svendborg. Unfortunately, Yoanna and Kirsten can’t participate so Michala has decided to sign up with her husband Kim. Let’s see how that turns out – Will keep you posted.
