The Hobiegirls have arrived at the European Sailing Championships in Barcelona

So they are back on the road, minus one unfortunately (me)! What an earth can go wrong without my careful guidance and monitoring, well………

It already started to go wrong before they even left the country, miscommunication meant that they did not get their lift to the station, panic one (remember they are never on time). Panic two, the metro was not functioning and this being the biggest travel day for the summer holidays, they had to rush back to the normal train.   As you know, they are hardly quiet those two and immediately sat in the quiet train carriage and started to talk incessantly, much to the disgust of the fellow passengers who had to ask them to shut up!

Ok, so they are finally at the airport, just in time and the panic is over, or is it??? Of course not, Yoanna passes through security with all alarms going off, being taken to the side to ask whey she is travelling with a knife in her hand luggage and not just a knife, but one that is illegal to carry (due to its length) under Danish law. There has to be some frantic negotiating going on (thank goodness she is a PR expert), to convince them not to call the police and allow her to go back down to check in and check the knife into the hold. It is a sailing knife, not your kitchen variety, just so you don’t think why on earth would she have that knife with her……You can’t call these two boring, that’s for sure.

They arrived in Barcelona with no further dramas and settled in ready for sailing to commence on Saturday.

A fantastic first day, two first places, even winning over the Masters and the Grand Masters. They were incredibly focused and had a great start rounding the top mark first on all three rounds, ending in first place. Second race they shared number 1 at the top mark, second round first again but third round 6th, finishing 6th in total but first place for the Women’s race. Third race was slow, wind dropped and boat speed was not good but they can remove this score as you are always able to drop your worst score for the day.

I have to tell you that what is even more remarkable is that Michala had surgery on her knee 5 weeks ago and no training has taken place for a while due to her injury. She has had to crawl around the boat on her butt rather than her knees and we are keeping our fingers crossed that if the wind picks up substantially she will be able to manage in the trapeze.

After the opening ceremony, the girls went out for a quiet dinner together to celebrate their first day’s success. Michala thought It was a good idea to keep the windows open and get some fresh air, unfortunately, the mosquitos decided to take a liking to Yoanna and she is literally covered in mosquito bites all over her body and her face. Who would have thought after Australia the animals are more aggressive in Barcelona!!

Keep following the Hobiegirls blog to see how they do this week and I am not just talking about their sailing.
