After returning from the World Championships in February, the girls and I have been training all winter. But Yoanna has also been very busy schedule with work, 4 horses and her son Jonathan and her unofficial work as a PR girl. So yes, the oldest of the lot has been out training a lot with Michala and I think she is quite pleased with my progress. Apart from a little unexpected swimming trip (no Michala, it was your fault), it’s going quite well.
Michala has been concentrating on her technical skills after meeting with Peter Wolsing a very experienced Danish sailor who has written several books about tactics and racing. I am not sure we will get to speak to him again as he looked exhausted after all her tactic questions. Maybe he could do with a pair of earplugs!
There have been some technical problems with the boats rudder and although the girls are getting quite good at making repairs, they still have the skills to rope people in (no pun intended), to give them a hand. Claus from Skovshoved harbour (Skovshoved Boat Repair) has been on standby more than once, although he seems to have disappeared lately!!
Apart from their new skills in boat repairs, they are still working on their race tactics to get the edge on the competitors. Yoanna has just returned from France having one-on-one Hobie Cat training with a French contestant, in readiness for the Hobie European Championships.
Good news…… The Hobiegirls are off to Barcelona for the European Championships at the end of June. The hotel is booked and they have been offered a 2 year old boat to rent from one of the French Hobie teams, so this time there are no excuses if things go wrong. I just hope that Michala holds onto her contact lenses and Yoanna stops talking to everyone she meets (although lately Michala is talking insessently, maybe it’s catching)!
Spring has finally arrived to Denmark and although it is getting warmer, the water is still around 8-10 degrees. Today I have been out sailing with Michala in 8-10 meter per second winds (North Easterly winds, so large waves), it was great but very cold when the waves hit. The boat is nearly perfect apart from the main block.
We had a slight accident yesterday when we managed to crash into a young optimist sailor. 15 new Optimist sailors were training inside the harbor leaving us with absolutely no space to control the Hobie resulting in us crashing into one of the boats. I have to say, the little Optimist girl was very cool about it even though she was jammed between the two Hobie hulls in front of our boat. Luckily it was not the young Prince who was also out on the water……
p.s. I am now officially a Hobiegirl crew member and not just a spare crew.. Who would have thought that a year ago…. Not me I can tell you.
Thanks for following us, we will keep you posted with news and photos, especially at the European Championships in end of June.
By the way DHCA (Danish Hobie Class Assocition) have asked us the HobieGirls.com to design a Danish Hobie event calendar poster for 2014, you can see the result below.
p.p.s The girls need a sponsor for the European Championships, it would be a great opportunity for exposure in Europe… anyone?????
Last but not least, as you are aware, our boat is very old and with that comes many obstacles for us to overcome in sailing with such an old boat. Just think what we could do with a new Hobie Cat?
