It is our last full day here in Jervis Bay and we are up early for our last search for the kangaroos. It is overcast and a little drizzly but nothing curbs our enthusiasm. We are picked up by David, not only our taxi service from Sydney but also a local, who has kindly offered to take us. He arrives in a fantastic Ford Panther (I am pretty sure that is what it was called), which looks like a Subaru impeza (my kids would be so envious). Our PR expert Yoanna sits in front and Michala and I in the back and we are ready with our weet-bix as the locals have assured us that this is their favourite food. But what else has Michala packed now? Why on earth have we got a saucepan with us?. She has been told that Kangaroos have sharp nails so to avoid too close an encounter, she has decided that she will feed them from the pan (note to Michala, not sure they will spot the weet-bix in the pan but she insists).
We arrive at Booderee National Park and already spot a mother and baby in the car park. Yoanna (without pan), crouches down and gets quite close. No carrot this time..Michala with pan in hand, has not chance. I think the Roos think she is going to hit them with it and promptly move away.
We go further down into the park towards the beach and come across quite a few kangaroos and one with baby in the pouch, we are so excited, until I spot a sign saying not to feed the animals! What can I say, you will know by now that those kind of signs have no impact on the girls, some just keep feeding, no they are not for you Michala.
The national park has the most beautiful beach, pure white sands, clear turquoise colour sea and after exploring we head back into the car to drive further along the coast. Michala very quickly falls asleep, no kidding Michala, it must be all these early mornings. Actually each time we get back into the car she falls asleep, there have been a lot of early mornings.
We return for some much needed breakfast before going down to the beach to watch the final races take place. It is a little cool and continues to drizzle (must be a hint it is time to be going home). The Australians win the World championships and they thoroughly deserve it. You can see the winners here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOJfo6ezf5M#t=108. The young Danes come in a very respectable 15th and 16th place and have sailed beautifully throughout the whole Regatta.
Back to the apartment to pack up and head off to the finals dinner/party. Great evening with everyone relaxed, stunning fireworks display followed by dancing.
We really need to take this opportunity to thanks everyone who has made us feel so welcome here in Huskisson. Particularly our landlord David, our friend and taxi driver David, John Fergusson at Kiosk (will miss your fabulous breakfasts), but not least the Hobie sailors from all over the world who have opened up their hearts and shared all the knowledge they have gained so that the girls can become even better Hobie sailors.
We have had the most wonderful adventure over the last 16 days. We have worked hard, played hard, laughed so that we have tears down our faces and our stomachs hurt. It doesn’t get much better than this.
We also want to thank our families for their support in giving us this opportunity to have this adventure.
Next day; Drive to airport, yup you guessed it, Michala is asleep again and here we go..its contagious……Yoanna’s asleep now.
A final huge thank you to all our Facebook/hobiegirls.com fans who have continued to read about their adventures. We hope you will continue to follow their journey in future European and World’s
Over and out!
P.s. That’s the men’s toilet Kirsten.
