HobieGirls Aussie TV-interview / Day 1 Hobie Open Semi Finals… No Wind

Overcast and a bit of a chilly start to the day but we are up early and down to the boats by 8.00am for the skipper and boat allocation meeting.  So far no wind, so sailing is temporarily postponed.  To get through the wait, we decided to engage in some TRX training session with some Pilates thrown in, followed by some bird watching; spotted a rare cukatoo.  Others got through the wait by wake boarding, paddle boarding and catching up on sleep.

I managed to locate the media office and did a bit of PR on the HobieGirls, which resulted in them wanting to interview the girls for hobie.com.  Very excited as I knew this could be the greatest bit of PR we get and worldwide too.  The girls are a bit nervous but I remind them just to be themselves, ok, maybe that was a bad idea.  I stand back a bit to give them some room, but can hear Michala telling Yoanna not to talk too much, oh boy, here we go….. and the cameras roll, Yoanna looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights of a car and Michala develops verbal diarrhea.  I decide to move away and distance myself from my team.  I convince myself that the it will be ok once they edit the interview.  When did I become a optimist?  You can see the interview here:

By 3pm, the horn sounded to indicate that sailing was cancelled and would resume again tomorrow. To make up for the day, we decided to go for a kayak ride down the river, intrepid explorers once again!  The girls ran away from me at one point to climb on a climbing frame, apparently they had planned the escape in detail but I soon managed to get them back under control, until we go and buy our kayak tickets and they literally cycle directly into the shop!

We were all ready with Michala bringing the GoPro camera, which is waterproof to record both on film and video our new adventure.  Yoanna and I started to paddle out briskly (yes girls I know I look terrified, but I have seen Crocodile Dundee (you thought I forgot about films today, didn’t you?).  Michala is making strange noises behind me, kind of a gurgling, mumbling sound and I am beginning to worry until I realize that she was trying to paddle and film at the same time, meaning that the GoPro had to be stuffed in her mouth and she was still trying to communicate with us, this brings film making to a new level.  You can see the YouTube video here:

The Creek is eerily beautiful, with pelicans, storks and other species (if I knew the names I would tell you, but I am not a regular bird spotter).  Yoanna paddles on and soon she is a dot in the horizon, I am sticking close to Michala, who decides to stand up on her boat, until she spots the largest stingray and promptly sits back down again.  We managed to get the stingray on film.  We have left it a bit late to return the boats and are frantically trying to paddle against the tide.  Yoanna is up front again…I’m the bloody personal trainer Yoanna!

She manages to dock onto a a deserted island beach and writes HobieGirls.com on the sand, I think she is pretending to be one of the first settlers.  We manage only to be 10 minutes late with our boats, but the boat company got fed up and went home.

Michala and I are hungry and tired after our adventure and decide to have an early dinner of fresh large prawns whilst Yoanna goes off to a beach party. As you know, Yoanna does not want to miss out on the action but I don’t think she has realised its raining…

P.s. Michala, stop mixing the salt and sugar together, my tea is disgusting
