Australia – HobieGirls rest day 2 & kangaroos

Woken by Michala at 5.30am to go and find some kangaroos, hopefully she has forgotten about the camels. We had inside information that they meet by the beach at dawn and dusk, so we feel like we are intrepid explorers off to discover a new species, well they are new to us! Michala, not content to have a break from making packed lunches, decides that we need to have food with us for the Roos and proceeds to pack a very large lunch to tempt them.

We get on our bikes again and off we go, very excited to get close to skippy (see another film, ok TV series, close though). We looked high and low, even going into the bush, ok it was a small bush but we did try, but no kangaroos. Very disappointed, we went in search of other new species. We managed to find some interesting tracks in the sand and we are pretty sure they were possum and kangaroo tracks, Michala pointed to what she claims was kangaroo droppings, but I think it was an acorn!

We did, however see a pelican and a huntsman spider, which is huge (I know it was dead Yoanna, but we still saw it).

By this time we were exhausted and headed back to town for some much needed breakfast; Michala is still carrying the food for the animals.

Had a leisurely day on the beach, watching the sailing, only for the race to be postponed due to high winds again.. Thought it was a bit ‘naughty, (thanks for the word Michala) when someone asked me where I got my thongs from, only to realize they were talking about my flip flops.

As dusk fell, we managed to convince Leah who had a car, to drive us out to Erwol Bay, where we just knew there would be kangaroos. Leah, who is one of the sailors here and Australian (so we had a real expert on kangaroos), has a custom built car. It’s not so much the look, but what she has fitted inside the car. The boot is filled with two of the biggest speakers we have ever seen. We were a bit puzzled when she gave us a huge box filled with disposable earplugs and suggested we take some. Well if I didn’t have a hearing problem before, I definitely have one now!

But we did get to see the kangaroos. Michala, with her reorganized packed lunch, managed to get very close, only to get a bit nervous when his hands came to take the food. We had been told their claws were quite sharp. Yoanna followed next and managed also to get very close, while filming the experience on her phone. So we were happy explorers by the end of the day. I told you, the Hobiegirls never give up. Below you can see our kangaroo YouTube film…

Back to the apartment where the French had been invited to a fantastic dinner made by Yoanna. She is a superb cook and we are turning into a formidable team (ok, she burnt the rolls this morning but we can all make mistakes)!

The girls both not only speak English, obviously Danish but also French and German and switch with remarkable ease, giving them the added bonus of meeting even more people here at the Worlds.

p.s. miracle, all keys accounted for, but where the hell is that wallet.
